Vivacia is captained by Ephron Vestrit until his death, which coincides with her quickening. After quickening, she is given to Ephron's daughter Keffria. Her husband, Kyle Haven, then captains the ship and uses her as a slaveship, against the Vestrit family wishes. Being used as a slaver severely affects Vivacia, driving her to the brink of madness. Then, she is taken by the pirate Kennit. Vivacia is charmed by Kennit, developing almost a crush on him, and becoming intensely jealous of Etta. She comes to realize she would rather have Kennit as captain than Kyle, as he treats her well and pays her lots of attention and compliments.
Gradually, the ship learns to be independent of her family and willingly becomes a pirate ship. Throughout the series, Viviacia struggles with Wintrow's unwillingness to be aboard her and his attempts to hold himself separate from her. Although they have a deep bond and love for each other, Wintrow's reluctance to love her is in contrast with Kennit's base need to be loved by a liveship, and several times, Vivacia defends Kennit over Wintrow.
In Ship of Destiny, Vivacia discovers the truth of wizardwood, dragons, and liveships, and this knowledge sends her into deep despair. For a period of time she is possessed by the dragon Bolt, but when Althea Vestrit, who also has a bond with Vivacia, is captured by Kennit, Viviacia and Bolt merge into one being. Viviacia still loves Kennit and is torn between him and Althea after Kennit rapes her, but eventually comes to peace with who Kennit is and who she has become.
After Kennit's death, Vivacia is captained by Wintrow. She remains a pirate ship and sails happily with a Vestrit aboard her and a dragon within her.
