Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings Wiki

Time is a hard aspect to define in the Realm of the Elderlings series. The usual and most approximate clue for guessing time resides in seasons. However, there are some events that, by references, are feasible for an establishing of a timeline. The basis is, frequently, characters' ages and/or very sparse events.

In this proposed chronology, presented below, the timeline will be divided in two parts. As we don't have a certain date to begin with, the year 0, the mark, will be the arrival of FitzChivalry Farseer to Buckkeep, event that marks the beggining of the series.

Events prior to this will be referenced as BBS (Before the Begining of the Series) and the ones after as ABS (After the Begining of the Series).

Please note that this method is a simple proposal of a timeline. It is a work in progress and can be changed anytime.

Datable events[]

Some unsolved clues[]

  • In a year A, Caution Farseer is born to Virile Farseer and Queen Capable.
    • 17 yrs later in year A +17, Caution is nominated Queen-in-Waiting. Possibly gets pregnant shortly after. Death of Capable, who doesn't live to see her grandchild. Birth of the Piebald Prince (Charger Farseer). Caution dies in childbirth.
    • 17 yrs later, in year A + 34, Charger is nominated King-in-Waiting by his grandfather, King Virile. Charger doesn't have to wait long for the throne, because
    • 3 yrs later, in year A + 37 Virile dies and Charger succeeds his grandfather. Charger has a short reign, with no amount of years noted.
  • In a year B, Bounty Farseer dies and is succeeded by his son, Shrewd Farseer. We know that on this year he was already married to Desire, so Constance's death happened sometime before this year, as well as her children's births. This also means that the events in this year B happened sometime after 24 BBS.
    • 17 yrs later, on the 17th year of Shrewd's reign (year B+17), The Fool arrives in Buckkeep. It is known that Desire was, at that time, absent, in Tradeford, her homeland.

Events impossible/very hard to date[]

  • Birth/Ascension/Marriage/Death of Farseer Family rulers, their wives/husbands and members of the family.
  • Events related to Six Duchies' history:
    • Conquest of Buck by Taker
    • Conquest of each of The Six Duchies
    • Conquest of Sandsedge by King Victor
    • Order and dates of conquest of the Six Duchies. Starting in Buck, the conquest possiby followed a circle-progression, and went south first. Victor moved inland and conquered Sandsedge; Wielder progressed the coastal line south until Chalced, and then ventured inland, conquering the remaining Farrow and Tilth; Slayer Farseer was the king associated with the conquest of Bearns. If the conquest progressed north first until Bearns and then south, then Slayer was one of the first kings. However, if the conquest followed the above mentioned circular progression, he could have succeeded Wielder, being the one who concluded the conquest of the Six Duchies. If this second option happens to be true, then he may be the son of Wielder and the father of Munificence, who was the first to call her state "the Six Duchies", which means that in her reign she was already ruling the final six duchies. Any monarch related to land conquest may have preceded her.
  • King Wisdom asks for Elderlings' help
  • First time Munificence Farseer called her state The Six Duchies.
